You all have seen this small toilet room situation in a majority of American master bathrooms. And this small room serves as a great opportunity for introducing fun wallpapers. But we wanted to try something different.

Typical master bathroom toilet situation.

Block printing is a common design tool used in a lot of cultures, but most commonly seen on fabric. We wanted to take this idea and see if we could apply it to walls. So at first we decided to make the block.

The first step was to draw out the design.

Then we traced the design on a tracing paper so that we can transfer it to the block. To make the block we used just a regular stamp making tool kit from Amazon.

Using the kit we carved out the design. We carved out the parts that were not part of the design (negative spaces). This way when we press the block/stamp over onto any surface, the design will imprint correctly.

We used wall paint and a scrap piece of brown paper to test out the block. Every imprint was slightly different and that is the beauty of block printing. This gives it an organic look without any effort.

We kept the wall color the same and used a white wall paint for the block print. We started on the inside wall first to see how it would look. At first we measured out the spacings. But once we had a few columns and rows it was easy to follow and went pretty quickly. The reason for using white was to bring some brightness to the windowless room.

Another great way to bring in light is to use mirrors. So we found this gorgeous mirror on Facebook Marketplace and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Being a vintage piece with faded out hand paint over a bright teal color was everything.

This is how we turned the corners for the block print. There were tough areas where the stamp would not fully print and we hand painted those small areas with a tiny paint brush.

Another small addition to the room was this wall shelf made of fine poplar wood which we got cut to custom length from HomeDepot.

A very tough room to capture in photos. And in this particular case this small space is much better in person than in photos.

You can use this block printing idea for anything. It could be a wall, a piece of furniture, art, fabric…anything at all. And what felt amazing after finishing this project was that it took no time and we didn’t have to break the bank. Watch our reel below to see the process!
